The sending-off of Kildare's Jack Sheridan after half-time allowed Carlow to scrape a win in Newbridge.

Kehoe Cup winners Kildare led 0-10 to 0-4 by the 32nd minute.

Carlow's Kevin McDonald opened from the wing in the third minute, but points from Jonathan Byrne (2), Jack Sheridan and Gerry Keegan (2) along with four Martin Fitzgerald frees saw Carlow reeling.

But instead of taking their lead into the break, Denis Murphy hit two scores as Ross Smithers landed a 35th-minute goal to leave Carlow trailing by just 0-10 to 1-6.

With Smithers' first-half goal followed by Sheridan's sending-off, Kildare were left punch drunk.

Despite playing all the hurling in the first half, Kildare relied on Paul Divilly adding a point as Carlow hit them in the chaos.

Denis Murphy added a free and a '65 to level the game. Carlow finally broke Kildare's resolve when Seamus Murphy scored their second goal.

In the end, following a response from Kildare's Paudie Ryan, Carlow held on to secure the points.
