Cork may not have won a game in the scheduled league clashes but they came good when it mattered most to preserve their top flight status in the NHL at Pearse Stadium.

Cork lost in the opening round of the league to Galway at this venue but turned the tables on the Tribesmen to send Micheal Donoghue’s charges down to Division 1B

Late goals from Cork’s Seamus Harnedy and Patrick Horgan secured the win which keeps the Rebels among the country’s elite.

Galway looked to be cruising to safety when they bounced back from a five-point deficit midway through the first-half to open up a goal lead with ten minutes remaining.

But Galway, despite Joe Canning hitting 0-13, got caught at the death as Harnedy and Horgan scored the goals which decided this relegation play-off.

Scorers – Cork: P Horgan 1-7 (3f), C Lehane 0-6, A Cadagon 0-3, S Harnedy 1-0, D Kearney 0-2, B Lawton 0-2, W Egan 0-1, B Cooper 0-1,

Galway: J Canning 0-13 (11f, 1’65, 1’sl), N Burke 0-3, C Mannion 0-3, D Burke 0-1, A Harte 0-1, P Brehony 0-1, C Whelan 0-1, I Tannian 0-1, A Smith 0-1.
