Late flurry gets Farney off the mark

Monaghan collected their first league points when they proved too strong for Louth in Castleblayney yesterday.
Monaghan got off to the livelier start and were ahead by 0-5 to 0-4 after 15 minutes as the visitors did well to remain in contention.
Play was a little scrappy, with numerous handling errors.
Monaghan struck for the only goal of the half through Fergal Rafter after 25 minutes, and that score helped them to a 1-9 to 0-6 interval lead.
Louth started the second half encouraginly but poor finishing wasted a series of chances.
By the 20th minute Monaghan had extended their lead to seven points and looked well on their way to a comfortable victory.
Louth then struck for a goal when a free by Diarmuid Murphy found its way to the Monaghan net to leave just four points between the sides with 14 minutes of the game remaining.
Monaghan responded well to that setback with a series of points and they wrapped up the victory with a late goal by Stephen Lambe.
