Lakemen make Lilies pay for ill-discipline
Westmeath 0-21 Kildare 0-10
Table-toppers Westmeath continued their unbeaten run on Saturday with a decisive win against a 13-man Kildare side struggling to find form.
The Lake men held a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the 15th minute in Newbridge, with half-forward Alan Devine adding the standout score in the 14th minute. By the end of the first half , midfielder Cormac Boyle had amassed three points while Kildare goalkeeper Paddy Moloney kept his team in contention with a string of fine saves.
Kildare struggled to cope with the Liam MacCarthy Cup side's expansive play and use of possession although midfielder Martin Fitzgerald pointed twice from distance to enliven the Lilies before half-time.
However, the 33rd-minute sending-off of Kildare's Mark Delaney had a crucial bearing on the second half as Westmeath's Derek McNicholas contributed his seventh point to put his side firmly in contention for league promotion.
In the end, following the second Kildare sending-off when Jack Sheridan was dismissed in the 67th minute, Westmeath eased to victory with full-forward Robbie Greville adding a sensational effort from the wing to leave Kildare unsure in the division.
