Goals win games, and one in each half for defending All-Ireland champions St Kieran's College made all the difference in this Kilkenny derby.

Adrian Mullen struck for the first in the opening half, and a second in the 41st minute from Martin Keoghan gave Kieran's a bounce as they were battling to overcome a deficit. Marc Drennan got a goal for CBS.

"We had to battle for that win," insisted St Kieran's manager Liam Smith after Saturday's Nowlan Park tie.

The CBS now face a tough All-Ireland quarter-final clash with championship favourites Ardscoil Rís, Limerick.

"We didn't do ourselves justice at all," suggested CBS manager PJ McCormack.

The CBS and their chief marksman, Sean Bolger, promised all sorts of mayhem as they dashed 0-5 to 0-1 clear after 11 minutes.

But Mullen's goal in the 18th minute put Kieran's in front, 1-3 to 0-5. At half-time the score was level at 1-3 to 0-6. The losers opened well in the new half, and with nine minutes gone, they were 0-9 to 1-4 clear.

Kieran's hit back for a point before Keoghan burst through for a goal in the 41st minute that put them 2-5 to 0-9 in front and headed in the direction of their 54th Leinster title.

Both had a man sent off, but the CBS will pay the bigger price because their dismissed player, Conor Doheny, was shown a straight red and will miss the Ardscoil tie.
