A well-taken goal from Marcus Kennedy and some fine goalkeeping from Brian McHugh were the decisive factors as Westmeath defeated Meath in Mullingar.

The wind-assisted home team led by 0-4 to 0-0 after five minutes, Sean O'Brien scoring all four. Meath gradually came more into the game but Westmeath finished the half strongly and led 0-10 to 0-5 ahead at the break.

The visitors were deservedly on level terms, 0-12 each, by the 43rd minute. Then came Kennedy's goal, quickly followed by a crucial save by McHugh from Mikey Cullen.
