Kavanagh inspires Saints
St Mullins 1-14 mt Leinster Rangers 0-10
St Mullins retained their title with a highly efficient dismantling of 2013 Leinster champions Mount Leinster Rangers at Netwatch Cullen Park yesterday.
The Saints' seven-point margin of victory was a true reflection of their superiority as, in winning a record 25th senior crown and retaining the Willie O'Connor Cup, St Mullins conclusively outfought, out-thought and outplayed their highly-rated south county neighbours.
The teams went point for point early on as St Mullins shaded the first half to take an 0-6 to 0-5 lead into the interval.
The anticipated second-half Rangers rally never materialised.
Instead, with Jack Kavanagh and Michael Walsh ruling midfield, the Saints took control.
Three unanswered points from left half forward Marty Kavanagh put the champions 0-11 to 0-8 ahead, the biggest lead either side enjoyed up to then.
With centre-forward James Doyle and Kavanagh in outstanding form, this combination drove the final nail in the Rangers coffin when Kavanagh provided the pass for Doyle to drill an unstoppable shot past Frank Foley in the Rangers goal.
Rangers were a major disappointment and simply did not perform.
