Tipperary star John O'Dwyer scored eight points as Cork IT advanced to next week's Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final.

As things stand, last year's beaten finalists are set to face either Mary Immaculate College or Dublin IT.

Should IT Carlow's appeal against expulsion be upheld, however, then there is a chance that Pat Mulcahy's charges might meet Waterford IT, who beat them in the 2014 decider.

While they didn't sparkle here, they did enough. Never trailing, they raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead and though NUIG did manage to draw within a point at 0-6 to 0-5, CIT led by four at half-time.

O'Dwyer was a constant threat. His eight points were split evenly between open play and placed balls and he was involved in other scores too from his roving role around the middle.

His fellow Tipp man, midfielder Conor Hammersley, also impressed while Stephen Murphy and Tomas Lawrence did well in the CIT defence.

Clare's Bobby Duggan was to the fore as NUIG launched their brief revival but overall their attack lacked sufficient punch.

Turning with a 0-10 to 0-6 lead, CIT did enough in the third quarter to ensure that any scores by the visitors - for whom Cathal Mannion threatened at times - were answered in kind.

Even so, the lead wasn't commanding and a Galway goal would certainly have changed things. By the time the visitors conjured a clear-cut opportunity, though, it was too late.

CIT had finally pushed on and extended their lead to 0-18 to 0-9 when Galway's Brendan O'Connor was hauled down for a penalty, but Murphy on the line made a good block from Duggan's effort.

Duggan did point from play immediately afterwards but CIT captain John Cronin had the final say with his third point.
