Impressive Byrne inspires Model
Wexford 3-18 Meath 2-7
This David and Goliath clash did not have a similar outcome to the biblical story as Wexford easily overcame hosts Meath in the Walsh Cup at Pairc Tailteann.
Meath, to their credit, put it up to the visitors in the early stages and were boosted by a Shane Brennan goal after six minutes.
They still led following a Brennan point on 19 minutes but Wexford gradually took control after that, scoring the final six points of the half to lead 0-12 to 1-4 at the break.
Ian Byrne contributed seven opening half points for the Model County and their lead would have been much greater but for three quality saves by Meath keeper Shane McGann.
Meath also made a bright start to the second half with two points from James Toher. However, keeper McGann was finally beaten by Byrne from the penalty spot on 48 minutes.
Wexford added a second goal from Harry Kehoe two minutes later to open up a 2-12 to 1-6 advantage.
That put paid to Meath's slim hopes, but they did snatch a second goal from substitute Ciaran Fitzsimons. Another sub Barry Carton completed the Wexford tally with an added-time goal.
