History made as hurling and camogie takes place at Irish Independent Park

History was made today at Irish Independent Park in Cork with the first Hurling and Camogie games to be played at the famous ground in the opening day of the Allianz Sciath na Scol.

There were four games listed with the boys of St. Niocláis Frankfield and Carrigaline BNS having the honour of playing the opening game at the ground.

Carrigaline’s full forward Ryan O’Neill became the first player to score at the venue when he pounced on a loose ball in the square to send the sliothar into the net.

St Niocláis slowly got into the game and led 4-4 to 1-0 at half time with goals from Mark O’Connell, Brandon Idah, William Buckley and David Ruddock.

Carrigaline staged a revival in the second half with goals from Nathan O’Keeffe and Shane Vaughan but they could never overcome the big first half lead of the Douglas side who went on to win 4-6 to 3-3.

The second game saw St. Anthony’s come out on top in a low scoring final against Gael Scoil Uí Riordain on a 1-5 to 0-4.

The deciding score in this game came in the second minute when Cian McCarthy goaled for the Ballinlough boys and they were always in control throughout the game.

Beaumont Boys NS and Scoil Eoin Innishannon served up a very skilful contest with the Beaumont Boys coming out on top 4-6 to 1-4.

It was an even first half with Beaumont leading 1-3 to 1-2 at the interval.

Three second half goals the best of them from Cathal Heffernan son of Rob Heffernan put the game beyond the South East side.

Five goals for the girls from Berrings saw them win the first Camogie final with a 5-0 to 1-5 win over Kilcredan.

Four of the goals came in the opening half as Berrings led 4-0 to 1-4 at half time.

Clodagh Mulhare contributed 1-4 of Kilcredan’s tally and her display was the highlight of the four days and she is a girl to be watched in the future.
