Higgins inspires as bragging rights go to Ballyhaunis
Ballyhaunis 0-20 Tooreen 1-14
Ballyhaunis retained their Mayo senior hurling crown after a hard-fought victory over near-neighbours and rivals Tooreen.
Seven points from wing-forward Brian Hunt and six from midfielder Keith Higgins (above) helped the home side shake off a determined Tooreen on a beautiful afternoon in Ballyhaunis.
Some of the score-taking on display was immense, none more so than from the county senior football captain Higgins who nailed three frees from his own '65.
Tooreen grabbed the only goal of the game midway through the first half when county star Kenny Feeney, who finished with 1-5 to his name, flicked to the net but that was as good as it got for the village side.
A flurry of scores towards the end of the half had Ballyhaunis three to the good at the interval (0-11 to 1-5) but Tooreen were unable to break down a resolute home defence in the second half.
