Leo O'Connor's Limerick held firm against Tipperary to book their place in next month's Munster intermediate hurling championship final.

The Shannonsiders withstood a late Tipp fightback at Semple Stadium as points from goal-scorer Pat Ryan and substitute Barry Murphy set up a clash with Clare on July 6.

That will be a repeat of the 2011 Munster intermediate final and Limerick, runners-up last year, will go in search of their first provincial crown in this grade since 2008.

Boasting a team featuring three of Na Piarsaigh's All-Ireland senior club title winners, and nine county U-21 panellists, Limerick had goals in either half from David Dempsey and Ryan.

Dempsey, one of the Na Piarsaigh contingent, struck in the 12th minute, just one of the numerous goal chances created that Limerick actually took before half-time.

They were six points clear - 1-6 to 0-3 - before Tipp hit four without reply to remain in touch at the break, trailing by 0-7 to 1-6.

Pat Ryan took aim from 20 metres out and the sliotar flew past goalkeeper Brian Hogan, with the elements playing a part.

Tipp, then trailing by 0-9 to 2-6, were faced with a fresh challenge but despite falling three points behind twice more, they were level at 0-15 to 2-9 eight minutes from time.

But those late scores sent Limerick through to next month's local derby against Clare.
