Goal from Brook Byers gets Mourne men off the mark

DOWN powered to the post in this opening Division 2B match against Armagh at Pairc Esler yesterday.

Yet for most of the match the visitors held the initiative.

Armagh full-forward Ryan Gaffney was the focal point in the opening half and his radar-like free-taking earned the Orchard side a 0-6 to 0-3 lead.

Kieran McKernan was the only other Armagh scorer.

While Down were below par in the first half, they improved after the break, hitting five points to steady their ship.

In the 62nd minutes Brook Byers hit the back of the net and from there onwards Down's fitness got them over the line, as they struck over a further five points.

Both teams ended with 14 men as Down's Michael Hughes and Armagh's Caily Gorman got the line for an off-the-ball incident.
