Glensmen reel in Carlow at the death to edge thriller
Antrim 3-20 Carlow 2-22
A point out from Antrim substitute James McNaughton in the dying embers of extra time in this thrilling Christy Ring Cup 1st round tie at Netwatch Cullen Park saw the Glensmen take the honours against a Carlow side which looked the more likely winners throughout.
In a game of 47 scores, the teams were tied at 2-16 apiece at the end of normal time, without Antrim ever having held the lead.
A 20th-minute goal from Carlow captain Marty Kavanagh put the home side into a 1-6 to 0-2 lead but an Antrim goal just before half time from Niall McCann, following a great pass from Neil McManus, saw the visitors cut the arrears to 1-9 to 1-5 by half time.
In extra time Antrim hit the front for the first time with a fine point from Ciaran Clarke, who had earlier scored a superb goal in the 60th minute to cut the home lead to a point (1-15 to 2-11).
Carlow went into a four-point lead which looked as if it would see them home but Antrim refused to buckle and a McManus point was followed by a goal from a close range free to level matters before McNaughton's late point gave the Saffrons victory.
