Peter Duggan and Diarmaid Byrnes helped themselves to five points each as LIT hammered 14-man WIT in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final at Moylish.

The win puts Davy Fitzgerald's men into the finals weekend in Cork at the end of the month, when they will look to claim the title for the third time.

This game was made much easier for them when Waterford star Austin Gleeson was given a straight red shortly before the interval.

It was a devastating blow to WIT's challenge as they attempted to reach their second successive finals weekend. After Gleeson was sent from the field after a clash with Oisin O'Brien, LIT never looked back.

Fitzgerald's side were 0-8 to 0-5 up after a solid first half where Duggan was their main man. The Clare senior hit all five of his scores in the opening half-hour.

He began the scoring after seven minutes, and by the time Byrnes started his tally, LIT were 0-6 to 0-2 up after 21 minutes.

Topped

LIT have not won the Fitzgibbon Cup since 2007, but they had already beaten Maynooth, UCD and UCC this term as they topped Group A. And once referee Cathal McAllister sent off Gleeson after 28 minutes, the Limerick college were on their way.

They were completely dominant in the second half and other than a couple of efforts from Johnny Hayes and an Owen McGrath point, WIT had no response.

Byrnes made his presence felt around midfield, and the Limerick county player hit his second point six minutes in.

He would hit three more, while David Reidy and Cathal Barrett also contributed to the scoring. David Dempsey shot their 16th point with four minutes remaining and they eased to victory.

LIT join fellow Limerick side Mary Immaculate in the semi-finals and their manager is delighted with that achievement.

"A win is a win, that's the most important thing. We are in the weekend and that's phenomenal," said a delighted Fitzgerald.

"For a small college like us that's phenomenal. We have nine or ten got to in the last 13 and 14 years, that's fantastic."
