Galway cruised into a Leinster semi-final meeting with Offaly when scoring 3-21 from play to brush Westmeath aside in Mullingar.
Michael Ryan’s men never got a hold on the game as last year’s All-Ireland finalists bossed matters from the outset. Four points in the opening five minutes set the trend, with only Niall O’Brien posing a threat for Westmeath up front.
Galway eased their way to an impressive 0-17 to 0-5 interval lead and then any hopes of a Westmeath revival disappeared when corner-back Shane Power was dismissed for an off the ball challenge on Joe Canning.
Canning, who had scored 0-8 by then, went off as a precaution having suffered a head injury. Galway, with manager Micheal Donoghue in charge for his first championship game, pulled away after that with Jason Flynn getting their first goal after 44 minutes.
Then Joseph Cooney soloed through to fire to the net and become the last of the starting forwards to find the range.
Westmeath never gave up but Galway were always able to find scored with Conor Cooney marking his return from injury with four points from play off the bench.
The win was wrapped up when Conor Whelan got their third goal in the closing stages of a game played in front of 5,263.
