The Derry men dominated from the start, never troubled by a side that managed just one point from its entire attacking unit.

Ciaran Gaile fired home a fourth-minute penalty, and Colm McGoldrick palmed in a second Coleraine goal six minutes later.

Johnny McCusker steered over a couple of frees to keep the Down men in touch, but Eoghan Rua always looked dangerous. Ballela went 18 minutes without a score and their opponents went in at the break leading by 2-5 to 0-5. And the Derry champions continued to dominate, striking a brilliant third goal within a minute of the restart. Gaile and Colm McGoldrick sliced open the Ballela defence and Thomas Magee smashed the ball into the net.

Gaile followed up with a string of scores. The Down men managed just two second-half points.
