For the second year in a row Carlow hurlers dumped Laois out in the first round.
Mark Kavanagh shot five points in a row to put Laois in command, but James Doyle and Kevin McDonald helped cut the gap to 0-12 to 0-9 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half the sides were level thanks to two frees by McDonald and a point from substitute Owen Roberts.
Laois lost Ryan Mullaney who picked up a second yellow card, with Carlow pointing the resultant free, but then Kavanagh fired a goal.
Carlow responded well with two points from McDonald, but again Kavanagh converted a free for the visitors.
With Carlow trailing by two points, Doyle ran at the Laois defence and rifled a goal past Enda Rowland. With five minutes left Carlow tails were up and they finished strongly with another Doyle point.
