Goals in the second half by Allan Devine and Derek McNicholas proved sufficient for Westmeath to eke out their second consecutive League win in Mullingar yesterday.
Westmeath had the aid of a very strong wind in the first half, but they failed to take advantage of it, shooting nine wides and failing to score between the ninth and 27th minutes, when Brendan Murtagh and McNicholas respectively converted a free apiece.
Ruairí Convery's injury-time free, together with a fine score from play by Jonathan O'Dwyer, left Derry trailing 0-6 to 0-2 at the interval.
The home team displayed more spirit after the break, but their lead had been cut to three points when Devine got a crucial goal in the 48th minute.
With Convery in fine form from frees, Derry responded with five unanswered points to leave the deficit at the bare minimum. However, Devine and McNicholas combined in the 55th minute for the latter to blast home a great goal.
With sub Ciaran Doyle's two-point contribution vital, Westmeath held on.
