Derry fight back to overhaul Mayo
Derry 0-13 Mayo 0-11
Derry were made to fight all the way before they squeezed past a battling Mayo at Owenbeg.
The driving wind made this a game of two halves. The visitors built up a 0-10 to 0-4 half-time lead thanks largely to Kenny Feeney, who contributed 0-8 from placed balls.
Derry, though, took advantage of the conditions in the second half to battle back and catch the Westerners in the closing straight.
Few gave Mayo any real chance against a Derry side that had been comfortable in Division 2A.
However, half-forward Feeney's placed-ball accuracy and two monster points from midfielder Kieran McDermott helped the visitors to a six-point lead at the break.
The home side turned the game on its head after the interval, spending most of the second period in the Mayo half.
Three Jonathan O'Dwyer points and Ruairi Convery's free taking pegged back the Mayo lead, with Deaglan Foley getting a late insurance point for Derry to cement victory in a tight encounter.
