Jamie Coughlan bagged 1-10 as Cork IT turned on the style in the second half to burn off GMIT - and almost guarantee themselves a knockout spot.
Leading by 0-7 to 0-2 at half-time, CIT - the hosts of this year's finals weekend - showcased their class after the break.
Frees from Coughlan and good John Cashman points were features as CIT began well with five unanswered points, before Dan Nevin eventually got GMIT off the mark.
The home team raised the intensity and John O'Dwyer rounded off a good team move. Coughlan's strike made it 1-18 to 0-7 and then Iomar Creavan's handpass back to James Barrett looped over the netminder for an unfortunate own-goal.
