Convery the difference for Derry
Derry 1-14 Mayo 1-13
Derry claimed two valuable points after beating Mayo by the narrowest of margins at Elverys MacHale Park, Castlebar yesterday.
In the opening half, visitors Derry made the most of their chances and deserved their four-point half-time lead.
Their goal came from a 20th-minute penalty from Ruairi Convery, who also landed three great points, helping Derry to a 1-8 to 0-7 interval lead.
On the resumption, two early Derry points from Alan Grant and Brian Óg McGilligan extended their lead to six by the 37th minute.
Mayo were strugling to convert chances, but two magnificent points from wing-back Cathal Freeman kept them in touch.
In the final quarter, Derry looked comfortable with a five-point lead going into injury time. However, a Diarmuid McLoughlin point for Mayo was followed by a fine goal from corner-back Brian Hunt to leave the minimum between the sides.
But for Mayo time just ran out as Derry held on for a deserved victory.
