Meath's experience of playing at a higher level in the Walsh Cup stood to them as they eased past Wicklow at Arklow yesterday.
The teams were matched evenly for much of the first half as both defences showed great determination to give the forwards little time on the ball. Meath were five points up after 25 minutes but that was down to taking their chances while Wicklow hit five wides in the same period.
Four of Meath's starting six forwards scored from play in the opening half, and Neil Heffernan had a great goal chance saved by Wicklow's Robert Fitzgerald. In contrast Gavin Weir was the only starting Wicklow forward to score in the first half with Diarmuid Masterson four frees keeping the home team in touch.
Meath scored five unanswered points after half-time to put the game beyond Wicklow. The hosts did get a few good scores but Meath continued to push out their lead.
