Clinical Laois give young Royals a terrible trimming
Laois 7-26 Meath 0-5
A revamp of the senior football championship is in the pipeline and a rethink of hurling at underage level in the province may also be needed following this one-sided Leinster MHC encounter at Trim.
Tier three outfit Meath, winners of their opening round against Kildare, were obliterated by their tier two opponents, who had lost their opening game to Wexford.
Meath managed just a single point from play - Ronan Byrne scoring in the 33rd minute.
Laois led through a Martin Whelan point after 11 seconds and the first goal arrived on four minutes from Mark Kavanagh.
Kavanagh also scored the second goal after he easily rounded his marker on eight minutes
Laois led by 2-15 to 0-2 at half-time and there was no respite for the Royals as the winners added another 1-3 within five minutes of the restart.
Managed by 1985 All-Star Pat Critchley, Laois piled on the agony for their opponents throughout the half with Andrew Mortimer helping himself to two goals while substitutes Rory McEvoy and Eanna Lyons also found the net.
Laois now meet Offaly in a quarter final tie.
