They led all the way against a Limerick team that were dealt a serious setback in the 32nd minute when wing-forward, Barry Nash was sent off on a second yellow card. It greatly increased the load and while they battled bravely throughout the second half, Limerick just couldn’t peg the home side back.

Both sides scored 0-9 in the second half, a returns which suited Clare who had banked a winning deposit in the first-half.

Clare were 1-10 to 0-9 ahead at half-time, having led all the way from the first minute when John Conlon whipped in a goal off a diagonal delivery from Galvin.

Conlon caused Limerick all sorts of trouble throughout the first half, timing his runs into open space to perfection while also doing well under the high ball. The only blip was in his shooting as he off-target on three occasions.

Clare led by 1-6 to 0-4 after 23 minutes but momentum switched Limerick’s way for the next seven minutes, during which they out-scored their rivals 0-5 to 0-1 to cut the deficit to a point.

Paul Browne, who shot three points from open play in the first half, and Declan Hannon, who was accurate on free-taking, duty kept the scoreboard ticking over for Limerick.  They trailed by a point in the 31st minute before a long-range point from David McInerney and two pointed frees from Bobby Duggan gave Clare a four-point advantage at the break.

They nursed it all the way to the end to secure an escape from 1B while Limerick’s long wait for a return to the League’s top flight continues.
