Champions UL progress in Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup goal fest
University of Limerick 5-15 Mary Immaculate College 3-14
Eamon Cregan’s Mary I twice cut back huge leads in this entertaining Limerick derby but in the end were unable to close the deal against their neighbours.
The ability of Brian Lohan’s men to find the net at crucial stages was a key factor in them chalking up their second win of the campaign.
They got a glorious start against the breeze when Tommy Heffernan struck for two goals in the opening five minutes to give UL a huge boost against the breeze.
Mary I, backed by a huge crowd on their home pitch, finally got moving when they were 2-6 to 0-3 behind after 19 minutes when Limerick’s Declan Hannon got through for his first goal to help cut the gap to 2-8 to 1-9 at the interval.
UL introduced Clare’s Cathal McInerney after the restart and the All-Ireland winner hit three points in less than four minutes as UL again pulled away with goals from a long range Jason Forde free and one from Pat Ryan pushing them 4-14 to 1-12 in front going into the final quarter.
However, a Sean Linnane goal sparked a revival by the home side and Hannon’s second goal set up the prospect of a remarkable comeback as UL’s eleven points advantage was whittled back to four.
But the revival was brought to a halt when Limerick’s Kevin O’Brien found the net on the closing stages.
