Boland brace seals win
Mayo 0-8 Kildare 0-6
Fergal Boland was the Mayo hero after he grabbed the last two scores to secure victory in the All-Ireland U-21 'B' hurling quarter-final Newbridge on Saturday in a low-scoring tie.
The lack of scores owed to some very wayward shooting and Kildare, in particular, were left kicking themselves after not scoring again once Matthew Melia had put them 0-6 to 0-5 ahead in the 46th minute.
It was clear from early on that it would be a game of few scores. Jack Sheridan was on target for Kildare after five minutes but it took until the 11th minute for Boland to open Mayo's account.
The teams were tied at 0-3 each at half-time but the switch to move Sheridan from centre-back into the forwards seemed to pay dividends for Kildare when he scored the first two points after the restart.
However, his direct opponent, David Kenny, strode forward to land a brace of long-range points to level the game once more.
Melia's point just after the midway stage of the second half put Kildare ahead but that was as good as it got for the home team.
Sean Kenny landed an equalising score in the 49th minute and that was followed by a brace from Boland, the first in the 54th minute and another deep into injury time, to secure the win.
