A well-taken goal by Redmond Barry in the 51st minute put Wexford on the road to a gritty victory over Kilkenny at Nowlan Park.

Kilkenny, who were poor during the opening half and trailed by 1-8 to 0-4 at the break, thundered back into the game in the second half. They drew level in the 50th minute when Padraig Phelan shot a point to make it 0-12 to 1-9.

However, within seconds a fatal error in defence undid all their earlier good work. When two defenders knocked into each other under a high ball, Barry got a clear run at goal and he made no mistake from close range.

Wexford regained their composure after being under huge pressure and they drove on. There was a quick exchange of points between Owen McGrath and Benny Jordan as Kilkenny kept the game alive.

However, Wexford held out to add to their provincial U-21 success.
