Before his sudden death in December, Páidí ó Sé, in his unique style, had planned his own contribution to The Gathering. Following his sad loss, his family decided that they would take up the running and so Páidí famous Comórtas Peile lives on.

This year the Eurospar Cuisine De France Comórtas Peile Páidí ó Sé has expanded into a major international Gaelic games tournament. This was Páidí's vision – that it would be west Kerry's salute to The Gathering.

Páidí was a man who got things done and who never took no for an answer so once he decided this year's Comórtas would be the biggest ever, it was a done deal you could say. Already 48 teams from seven countries have signed up to compete in what's set to be a massive weekend in the GAA calendar.

"The Comórtas was my dad's personal contribution to The Gathering initiative and the football tournament was his annual effort to promote the Kerry Gaeltacht and West Kerry region that he loved so much," said Páidí's son Pádraig Óg. "He would have been delighted to see the efforts by all the teams and our main partners Eurospar and Cuisine de France to remain committed to the tournament this year and long may it continue in his honour."

And once again the Laoch na hImeartha, the player of the tournament, will honour Páidí's great friend, former Sunday Independent editor Aengus Fanning. Mayo star Cora Staunton, who lit up last year's tournament, was the first winner of this award following her brilliant performances for her club Carnacon.

This year, because of the huge number of teams entered, the Aengus Fanning Laoch na hImeartha award will be given to the best player in both the men's and women's competitions.

The Comórtas will be played in west Kerry over the weekend February 22-24.

Pictured at last week's launch in Dublin are Páidí's daughters Siún and Neasa.
