A goal midway through each half paved the way for the first win in 23 years for Newcastle as they outplayed neighbours, and favourites, Dromcollogher/Broadford for only their third win in their 128-year history.

Newcastle West, coached by Donegal man Anton McFadden got off to a flying start and led by 0-5 to nil after 13 minutes before Killian Phair pointed a Drom/Broadford free.

But within a minute Jamie Lee created the chance to give long-serving Kelly the opening he needed to crash home a goal for Newcastle West.

It took Drom/Broadford 22 minutes to get their first score from play, a Seanie Buckley point, and by half-time Newcastle West led by 1-8 to 0-4.

Drom/Broadford had the first three points of the second half through Derry McCarthy, Phair (free) and Pat Donnelly (free) but that was as close as it got and Lee's goal after 64 minutes wrapped it up for Newcastle West.

Kelly, Lee, Paul Hannon and captain Stephen Nix shone for the winners against a Drom/Broadford who managed only three points from play, two of them from Seanie Buckley.
