UCD will travel to Cork to play UCC in the quarter-finals after coming through a big test in Dangan today.
Hero of the hour was Westmeath’s John Heslin for a side with several Dublin stars such Jack McCaffrey, Michael Fitzsimons and Paul Mannion on board.
NUIG, who paid the price for some wayward shooting which undermined a decent challenge, led by 1-3 to 0-3 at the interval after Antrim’s Owen Gallagher had finished a good move with a fine goal late in the first half.
But Heslin took over in the third quarter and kicked two excellent points from play and one from a free to tie the match before Barry O’Sullivan edged them in front.
Peter Cooke hit back with two points for NUIG but Heslin and Mannion, who was denied a goal in the opening minutes by goalkeeper Donie O’Sullivan, responded for UCD.
And while NUIG’s Ray Connellan cancelled a point from Conor McCarthy, the home side were unable to convert chances and Heslin sealed it with a late free.
