A young GAA player is making ‘great progress’ in hospital after being involved in a serious car accident late last month.

Odhrán McKenna (17) was critically injured in a one-vehicle collision after the car he was driving struck a tree in Belfast.

The teenager was in a critical condition after being admitted to hospital, but on Sunday a photograph was posted to Facebook showing Odhrán giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed.

He was pictured with Donna Tohill, head of the senior school at St Mary's Grammar in west Belfast where Odhrán is a pupil.

The school said it was "delighted to see Odhrán making great progress".

Teacher Dr Aidan Donaldson was among those to comment on the Facebook photograph.

"Great to see that smile Odhran. God bless and get well soon. Doc," he said.

Last week the family issued a statement thanking the public for their continued support.

"As before we all truly appreciate and are totally overwhelmed by the support Odhrán is receiving. Thanks to each and every one of you,” they said.
