Strong finish sees Wexford through in Leinster U21 Championship

Wexford turned in a splendid closing quarter to fashion a fully deserved three point victory over a fancied Longford side in this Leinster Under-21 football championship opening round game played in St. Patrick’s Park.
Longford played their best football through the second quarter, a period in which they executed two fine goal, the opening goal coming after thirteen minutes through Larry Moran who finished a Liam sullivan cross to the net, bringing them level, 0-3 to 1-0, the Wexford points coming through Niall Hughes and two Donal Shanley frees.
Playing a fast, open brand of football, the Longford side had their second goal eight minutes before the break the Dessie Reynold show low to the net, a score that left them with a 2-1 to 0-5 interval lead.
After Sean Ryan and Dessie Reynolds had exchanged points on the resumption, Longford through points from Larry Moran and Rionn Brady led 2-4 to 0-8, as the game entered the final quarter. But the homeside with Niall Hughes and Glen Malone gaining control in midfield the homeside turned in a splendid final quarter, outscoring their opponents 0-6 to 0-1 with Shanley kicking over three excellent points, to add to points from Ian Carty, Brian Power and Sean Ryan to secure their next round passage.
