The holders, St Mary's of Edenderry, had St Pat's dead and buried in extra-time before a late Daragh Maguire goal forced a replay.

It was St Pat's that made the better start but St Mary's gradually got going and a Lorcan Pender goal ensured they went in with a narrow advantage at the break 1-3 to 0-5.

A Shane Gillespie goal with 10 minutes remaining put Pat's back in front, 1-9 to 1-7, and when Shane Barry pointed soon after it looked as if the holders would be sent crashing out of the competition.

But St Mary's showed admirable character in the closing stages with points from Sean Hurley, Sean Doyle and Anton Sullivan forcing extra-time, at 1-11 apiece.

The Leinster holders looked set to land the spoils when Sullivan raised a green flag in the first half of extra-time but St Pat's fought back gamely and centre-back Maguire netted a dramatic late equaliser to force a replay.

Six Colm MacGearailt frees proved crucial as Colaiste Eoin advanced after a hard-fought victory over Ardscoil na Trionoide, Athy in an entertaining contest at Blessington on Saturday afternoon.

The Stillorgan side made the more composed start and were two points up after five minutes thanks to two well-struck MacGearailt frees. Darragh Mulhall replied for Ardscoil with a long-range free two minutes later.

Colaiste Eoin led by 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval thanks to two further MacGearailt frees and a wonderful point from substitute Alex O Maoilmhiaigh.

The Athy School, who had midfielder Jamie Farrell red-carded on 48 minutes, fought back well and trailed by just a point with eight minutes to go but an O Murchu point and another Mac Gearailt free in injury-time sealed the win for Colaiste Eoin.
