Square ball will favour defences - this year

From the moment referee Syl Doyle raised a query about Graham Geraghty's positioning when he flicked the ball to the Kildare net last Sunday, you knew the goal wouldn't stand.

Why so? Because after the controversy surrounding Benny Coulter's 'square ball' goal in the Down-Kildare semi-final last year, the benefit of the doubt was always going to be with defenders this year.

Attackers, be warned. Coulter's goal ensured that Championship 2011 would be a barren zone for goal-poachers under the high ball around the square. It won't change either.

Well, not until 2012 anyway, when the pendulum will probably swing back.
