Sad passing of Fr Oliver Hughes

The death has taken place of one of the giants of colleges GAA, Fr Oliver Hughes, whose name is synonymous with the famed St Jarlath's in Tuam. Fr Hughes, who was 66, died yesterday after a long illness.

He was coach to four Hogan Cup winning sides in 1978, '82, '84 and 2002, having been on winning teams as a player in 1961 and '62.

As coach he was involved with some of Connacht's best players and developed a reputation for being innovative with a strong emphasis on the technical side of the game.

A native of Killererin, Father Hughes was parish priest of Corofin at the time of his death.
