Ryan's hat-trick sees WIT stroll to Fitzgibbon glory
WIT 4-13 UCD 0-8 Fitzgibbon Cup final AFTER Friday's dramatic Fitzgibbon semi-finals, the anticipated final thriller never materialised in Saturday's decider with WIT cruising to an easy victory.
Willie Ryan was the star for the Waterford college, grabbing a hat-trick of goals to secure the victory. Eoin Reid had the fourth, and with Rory Jacob leading the UCD defence a merry dance, it was hard to believe that WIT had played 20 minutes extra time in their semi-final on Friday.
WIT were on top in every position with Michael Walsh lording it in midfield. Ryan's first goal arrived in the fourth minute, and a succession of points, the best from Jacob in the 12th minute, quickly followed.
When Ryan lashed in goal number two in the 23rd minute it helped WIT to an interval lead of 2-6 to 0-4, Andy Smith getting three of UCD's four points.
Babs Keating made three substitutions for UCD at the break, but the second half was barely a minute old when Eoin Reid cracked in a superb goal. Brian Dowling, Jacob and Adrian Cullinane tacked on a few points and when Ryan completed his hat-trick the famous cup was heading back to WIT for the eighth time. The rout was complete.
UCD never got going, but that is a tribute to a well drilled WIT outfit who hurled confidently throughout the 60 minutes.
Very few UCD players emerged from this trouncing with any real credit, Smith and Eamonn Ryan apart, and the small crowd who braved the bitter cold were heading for the exit when the floodlights had barely been turned on. It was that one-sided.
Meanwhile in the Ryan Cup, Mary Immaculate College defeated Maynooth, 1-15 to 1-7 while King's Inn's took the Fergal Maher Cup defeating IT Tallaght 2-13 to 1-14 after extra time.
