Ruairi O'Connor proves Laois supersub
Laois 1-10 UCD 1-9
Mick Lillis' tenure as Laois senior football manager got off to a winning start in Ratheniska yesterday thanks to an injury-time point from substitute Ruairi O'Connor.
Laois had trailed by as much as six points early in the second half, but a goal from Jamie Farrell got them back into the game, as they finished the stronger to claim victory.
UCD had the better of the first half, with Westmeath's John Heslin and Monaghan's Conor McCarthy accounting for all of their scores. Heslin landed three frees while McCarthy added two from play and one from a placed ball as UCD led 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval.
Luke Kelly fired in a goal from close range in the 40th minute, but Laois midfielder Jamie Farrell replied with a sublime effort from distance to cancel out Kelly's strike.
Two points from substitute Kevin Meaney got Laois right back into the game and they led by a point at the end of normal time, only for UCD's Fiach Andrews to equalise with time almost up. The game seemed destined to end level until Ruairi O'Connor won possession 30 yards out before jinking away from his marker and firing over.
