Jack McCaffrey will return to training with Dublin this week ahead of his expected inclusion in Jim Gavin’s 2017 League panel.

The 2015 Footballer of the Year hasn’t played for his county since their win over Mayo in Castlebar last February.

McCaffrey opted out for the rest of the 2016 League and missed Dublin’s successful All-Ireland defence before travelling to Africa to undergo volunteer work as part of his medical studies.

Last month, the Clontarf club man publically confirmed his inter-county availability at the launch for this year’s Sigerson Cup, admitting: “I’d love to get back in,” ahead of the new season.

Last year’s All-Ireland winning panel and management are currently on a team holiday in Jamaica, though a group of players are back training with strength and conditioning coach, Bryan Cullen, which McCaffrey is set to join.

Paul Clarke will manage the team on Sunday when they play DCU in the opening round of this year’s O’Byrne Cup, though McCaffrey will line out with UCD in the competition having captained the college to last year’s Sigerson title.

Meanwhile, the GAA is facing a fixture flashpoint over their decision to move Cuala’s All-Ireland club semi-final from February 4th to the 25th.

This year’s Fitzgibbon Cup will take place in NUIG over the weekend of the 24 and 25, with four of Cuala’s players also on Nicky English’s UCD squad – Cian O’Callaghan, Con O’Callaghan, Jake Malone and Colm Cronin.

Cuala agreed to the request for a change in date after an appeal from semi-final opponents, Slaughtneil, who play St Vincent’s in the football semi on February 11.
