Referees placed in unfair situation

LET the record show that the following comments in no way impugn the integrity of referees Marty Duffy (Sligo), David Coldrick (Meath), Maurice Deegan (Laois) and Barry Cassidy (Derry).
The first three all have All-Ireland final experience, while Cassidy is clearly on the up, so they are all men of substance.
However, it was unwise to appoint them for Sunday's crucial round of NFL Division 2 games. Why so? Because, they're all from counties battling in that division.
However fair and honest they are, perception issues arise when referees are asked to adjudicate on games where the outcome may have a direct impact on their own counties.
Curiously, none of the referees for the Division 1 games -- Syl Doyle (Wexford, left), Cormac Reilly (Meath), Rory Hickey (Clare) and Joe McQuillan (Cavan) -- are from any of the eight counties in the group. So, why not switch some of them around with Duffy and Co?
Perception apart, it would be a whole lot fairer on the referees.
