Red-hot Galligan sees off star-studded Sligo to seal semi-final spot for Athlone

Athlone IT 1-9
Sligo IT 1-8

Ray Galligan's seven-point haul steered Athlone IT to a hard-fought victory at Ballyforan that books a semi-final date with UCC.

Sligo IT, with six inter-county players in their line-up, went ahead through Sean Kelly -- who went off injured before the break -- and held the midlanders scoreless for 20 minutes.

Athlone battled back to level at 0-3 apiece by half-time, and although David Givney put the north-westerners back in front, the game turned on John Reynolds' 37th-minute goal.

Sligo replied with an Eoin McHugh point, before Athlone hit three rapid scores from play, through David Egan and Galligan (two).

Alan Freeman and Stephen Henry clawed the lead back to two points, but two more points from Galligan secured the victory -- Givney's stoppage-time goal came just seconds before the final whistle.
