Red alert for Castletown as Barry delivers for St Anne's
St Anne's 2-14 Castletown 0-8
RED BARRY'S superb 36th-minute goal provided the catalyst for St Anne's to produce a fine exhibition of football at Wexford Park.
It wasn't the vintage final that everyone expected it might be but it didn't really matter to St Anne's, who turned on a power-packed display through the 60 minutes, playing the game with skill and pace to leave Castletown shellshocked.
They were helped along the way by a superb display from full-forward Barry, who finished with a tally of 1-8, with 1-2 coming from open play, as he teased and tormented the losers' defence.
Castletown were many people's favourites but St Anne's hunger was apparent from as early as the third minute, when Liam Og McGovern prised open the opposing defence before laying the ball off to Mark Furlong, who blazed high into the roof of the net. Points flowed from Barry with two frees, before Brendan Halpin opened the Castletown account on 11 minutes.
St Anne's continued to pick off some excellent points to lead 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval. After Anthony Masterson and Barry exchanged early second-half points, it appeared as if Castletown would bounce back when Colin Molloy pointed to leave four separating the sides (1-7 to 0-6). But it was the speed and counter-attacking of St Anne's that decided the destination of the title on 36 minutes.
Moving the ball quickly out of defence through midfield, it was McGovern who set up Barry and he powered his shot to the top right-hand corner of the net to give his side a seven-point cushion (2-7 to 0-6). Castletown battled bravely but could never reduce the deficit and sub Francis Simpson kicked over three late points to seal the victory.
