FORMER Sigerson Cup kingpins IT Tralee won the secondary competition at the first attempt on Saturday after a fierce battle.
IT Tralee, who regraded to the Trench Cup this year, put themselves in the driving seat with two first-half goals. The first came in the sixth minute when Brendan Poff's long-range free was horribly misjudged by Trinity goalkeeper Daragh Byrne and dropped into the net. The second arrived in the 22nd minute when Denis Crowley seized on a long pass in from wing-back Eoin Ryan.
That left IT Tralee 2-3 to 0-6 ahead at the interval but Trinity, inspired by Fermanagh attacker Thomas Corrigan, rallied strongly after the break in Leixlip and by the 45th minute they had drawn level.
However, points by substitutes Shane Hennessy, Sean Courtney and Michael Brennan put Tralee in command and they held out, despite a late point by Corrigan.
