The Donegal star nailed a match-winning haul of 1-6, including a superb 1-4 in the opening ten minutes against Garda College.

Highly-rated young Tyrone player Rory Brennan received a straight red card from referee Padraig Hughes after 24 minutes for striking Garda’s Philip Smith, but they were already leading 1-5 to 0-5 thanks to McBrearty’s sixth-minute goal.

Roscommon’s Colin Compton was the most dangerous forward for Garda, last year’s Trench Cup winners. But the visitors still trailed 1-7 to 0-5 at the break.

Armagh’s Ethan Rafferty had a fine second half, scoring several long-range points against the wind.

Seven minutes after the restart, Sean Fox saved a tamely-hit penalty from Garda’s Daithi Shannon.

Mayo’s Evan Regan flicked home a 57th-minute for UUJ with Carlow’s Brendan Murphy dismissed late on for the visitors.
