O'Driscoll on hand to break NUIG hearts
TWO injury-time points helped give UCC a win by the narrowest of margins against NUIG in the second round at the Mardyke yesterday.
Trailing by 1-5 to 0-7 as the game entered its 60th minute, a close-range free by Daithi Casey drew the home side level and then, with extra-time looming, substitute Barry O'Driscoll sent over a huge left-footed effort.
It capped a fine comeback by UCC, who trailed by 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time, but after limiting NUIG's attacking threat in the second half, the Cork side managed to do just enough at the other end to secure victory.
O'Driscoll, Casey and Sean Kiely were among UCC's brightest performers, with Cork star Michael Shields playing well at midfield and Adrian Greaney solid at centre-back.
UCC's David O'Callaghan and Cathal Kenny of NUIG were sent off in separate incidents late on, as the Cork side booked a quarter-final meeting with GMIT.
