Sky have been looking for someone with a profile to host their GAA and Quinn is said to be the frontrunner for the role.

The Republic of Ireland centre forward famously represented Dublin minors in hurling before he made the move to professional soccer.

Quinn had a lengthy professional soccer career in England, playing for Arsenal, Manchester City and enjoying a spell as player, manager and chairman of Sunderland.

Quinn has been a regular pundit on Sky Sports since his retirement  in 2003.

He also played football for Co Kildare club Eadestown after his retirement from professional football and won a junior county title in 2008.

Irish Independent columnist and Sky Sports presenter Rachel Wyse is also being tipped with a role on the coverage.

Last month Sky Sports won the rights to broadcast 14 games in the forthcoming Championship season, including two All-Ireland football quarter-finals involving the Leinster and Ulster champions.

The station will start its coverage of the Championship on June 7 with the match between Kilkenny and Offaly.
