Carlow CBS may have got it tactically wrong when dropping back corner-forward James Brennan into a sweeper role when playing with the wind in the first half.

They needed to be ahead at the break but despite three points from Adam Deering they trailed 0-4 to 0-3, with Jamie Myler getting two points for Good Counsel and Mikey Dwyer and Mark Rossiter one each.

Carlow hit the ground running in the second half. Deering and Shane O'Neill points nudged them in front but Good Counsel hit back with points from Tadgh Cody and Rossiter.

A delicious effort from Deering brought the sides level.  Good Counsel edged in front, but with the gap at just a point and only minutes left, Carlow were awarded a free on their own 45-metre line. It was a platform to go for a leveller but they got drawn into a bout of handbags.

When order was restored the referee hopped the ball and the New Ross boys broke clear and drew the free which Myler converted.
