More woe for Laois as Kevin Meaney latest to quit panel
Kevin Meaney is the latest player to quit the Laois football panel as they plunged to the bottom of Division 2 with a second successive defeat at the weekend.
With midfielder Brendan Quigley suspended, Meaney would have been expected to step up for the Cavan game in Portlaoise but it is understood that he left the panel last week.
With the withdrawal of Conor Meredith due to study commitments, the continued unavailability of Craig Rogers and MJ Tierney and the recent retirement of Peter O'Leary Laois have been hit hard and performances have suffered.
Meanwhile their Division 2 rivals Meath "seriously questioned" themselves after losing to Galway in the opening round of their league campaign last week, captain Donal Keogan admitted in the aftermath of Saturday night's rejuvenating victory over Kildare.
Keogan said they were "shocked" by the nature of the performance in Galway that appeared to blunt their high hopes of a return to Division 1 football for the first time in nine years.
He conceded that they were apprehensive heading into the Kildare game because they didn't know what to expect.
"We prepared well for last week (Galway) and to go out and have a dismal performance? You don't know what is going to come. But we questioned ourselves after the Galway game - seriously questioned ourselves," he stressed.
"We had a great week and I was reasonably confident. With the performance last week we were shocked ourselves but I knew we would come back and that there would be a backlash. We had to."
