Moolick strike seals deal for Lilywhites

Kildare maintained their perfect start to the campaign with this comfortable victory over Longford in Pearse Park.

Goals in either half from Eoghan O'Flaherty and substitute Tommy Moolick were crucial to Cian O'Neill's side coming out on top at an overcast Pearse Park. Longford were given a golden opportunity to net a consolation goal late on but were denied by Kildare goalkeeper Mark Donnellan, who saved Mark Hughes' penalty kick.

In a dull opening period, Denis Connerton's team went into an 0-3 to 0-1 lead with scores from Hughes, Diarmuid Masterson and the lively Liam Connerton.

Kildare made their first significant breakthrough in the 16th minute, when O'Flaherty exchanged a one-two with Kevin Feely before racing through the Longford defence and planting the ball in the far left-hand corner.

That goal settled the Lilywhites down and they moved into a 1-7 to 0-5 lead by the interval.

Veteran Brian Kavanagh and Hughes tried their best to keep Longford in touch but their hopes of following up a win over Limerick were dashed when Moolick finished to an empty net in the 64th minute. Moolick had the easy task as Daniel Flynn, a former Australian Rules player, powered through the Longford cover before offloading to his unmarked team-mate.
