Monaghan v Tyrone Preview

Published 15/06/2014 | 12:00

Reigning Ulster champions Monaghan will begin the defence of their title today as they take on Tyrone in Clones today in the provincial quarter final.

The Farney men, were knocked out of the championship at the quarter final stage by Tyrone last year and they will certainly be seeking revenge as they take on Mickey Harte’s side this afternoon.

The starting line up’s have been announced and Monoghan manager Malachy O’Rourke has decided to leave All Star forward Conor McManus on the bench. McManus tore ligaments in his ankle last month and has made a speedy recovery, however he has not been ultimately been chosen to start and will most likely be used as an impact sub.

Mickey Harte has made three changes to the side that was victorious in last month’s Ulster first-round replay against Down.

Conor Grugan has been chosen to make his championship debut, replacing Conor Clarke, who is recovering from a cruciate injury. Harte has also gone for experience in the form of Martin Penrose and Stephen O’Neill who are names ahead of Emmet McKenna and Kyle Coney.

The frontrunner of this afternoon’s clash in Clones will progress to the semi’s and an encounter with Armagh on the horizon on June 28.

Monaghan: R Beggan; C Walshe, D Wylie, F Kelly; D Mone, V Corey, K Duffy; D Clerkin, D Hughes; P Finlay, P Donaghy, P McKenna; D Malone, K Hughes, J McCarron.

Tyrone: N Morgan; A McRory, J McMahon, R McNamee; R McNabb, M Donnelly, P Harte; C Cavanagh, C Grugan; M Penrose, S Cavanagh, C McGinley; D McCurry, S O’Neill, R O’Neill.
